The fourth primary entry in the God of War franchise and the eighth entry chronologically, tne title features a break from norm from previous entries, now focusing loosely on Norse mythology, and shifting gameplay focus to over-the-shoulder combat and exploration. God of War tells the story of Kratos, now a nomad living in old Norway, living in seclusion with his son Atreus. After the death of Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, as well as an attack on their home from an unknown stranger, Kratos and Atreus must journey to the highest peak in all the realms to spread her ashes, while avoiding dangerous new enemies along the way.
A sequel, God of War: Ragnarök, will release in 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. God of War has also been re-released, still for the PlayStation 4, under the PlayStation Hits brand, resulting in a permanently lower price for the title. It has also received a patch for PlayStation 5 support, rendering it compatible with 4K resolution and 60 FPS on the console.
